While the better part of the US Biathlon Team is heading to Europe in the very moment, one week ago the first athletes already landed in Östersund, Sweden to start the final preparation for the upcoming World Cup season. For that first training week head coach Per Nilsson wanted to focus on the most promising athletes that included Tim Burke, Lowell Bailey and Jay Hakkinen. Instead of staying in the warm and rainy Östersund, the three athletes traveled a few hours to find a place that could offer really the best snow and skiing conditions.

The perils of an early season Nordic ski camp in Steamboat Springs came sharply into focus Friday morning for U.S. Adap­tive Nordic ski team coach Greg Rawlings. The team was scheduled to stage a late-morning time trial at the Steamboat Ski Touring Center. A week of careful preparations by the center's staff helped open some trails, but it wasn't enough.

After crashing during a training run at Copper Mountain on Thursday, U.S. Alpine Ski Team member Resi Stiegler is out for the season, the team announced Friday. She was carted down the hill in a sled before being taken to Steadman-Hawkins Clinic at the Vail Valley Medical Center. The team's medical director Richard Quincy said Stiegler suffered a serious complex injury.

This was a serious injury for Resi, but her spirit is strong   -Richard Quincy
